| am extremely happy that we are having our 7th edition of the BENGALURU
INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL being held during December, 4-11, 2014.
Govt., of Karnataka strongly believes that the encouragement to cultural activities is one of
the major responsibilities and duties of the State and as such has instituted a number of
Academies to promote Literature, Fine Arts, Music and culture in general. Karnataka
Chalanachitra Academy was formed to spread a healthy film culture across the State and it
has sincerely endeavored to live up to its assigned role. Recently, they have created history
by holding an International Film Festival for underprivileged rural children studying in
Municipal and Govt., schools by streaming films across more than 100 cinema halls
across the state. They have also been conducting the annual Bengaluru International Film
Festival in a professional way since their inception in 2009 and | am glad to know that it has
attracted the global attention. The Government is committed to create better infrastructure
inthe years to come and wish that the festival will grow to greater heights in the future.
|am sure Bengaluru film lovers, students of media & communications, Professionals will
utilize the opportunity and actively participate in the event and make it a big success.

| am glad that we are able to celebrate the medium of cinema through continuing of the
BENGALURU INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL for the 7th edition being held during
December, 4-11, 2014.
Bengaluru is known for its plurality of culture. It can assimilate global cultures and still
retain its own independent Identity. Despite stiff competition from various language
cinemas Kannada cinema has always held its status both in terms of number of films made
locally and also its representation in the National Cinema. Ifthe number of Kannada films
that is being shown in the Competition sections of BIFFES is any indication, it is evident
that there is a surge in the interest by the new generation of film makers to move on to the
Global arena. BIFFES has opened up a new world for our new generation of film makers to
look at the possibilities of film expression and that indeed was the objective when Govt., of
Karnataka decided to institute a Film Academy. In the years to come the Academy will
hope to take this forum outside Bengaluru as well and create a conducive environ in the
State to boost the quality of Kannada cinema _ to International arena by which the rich
tradition of Kannada will extend beyond the borders of the state.
1am confident that our endevour will be extensively supported by the film loving Bengaluru
public and that the energetic Kannada film industry will actively participate in the event
whole heartedly and make it a grand success.

The seventh edition of the BENGALURU INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL is all set to be
launched on 4th December, 2014 and the festival will be celebrated for a week till 11th
December 2014.
The Festival is now part of the annual culture calendar of Bengaluru. If we go by the
response of the public and the film professionals it is clearly evident that BIFFES has
become an inseparable part of their lifestyle. The demand for participation is growing from
the public on one side and from the film makers from all over the world on the other. The
sheer number of film screeners the festival received this year is the indication of the
visibility of the festival across the global film fraternity. More and more film makers from
different parts of the world have expressed keenness to be part of BIFFES. This intellectual
infrastructure now demands from the Government more physical infrastructure for
showcasing the films. |am sure the concerned Department and the Karnataka Chalanchitra
Academy will accept this challenge and work towards fulfilling the expectations of all
stakeholders. There is an urgent need to institutionalize the Festival in a more continuing
framework and we are indeed working towards establishment of a festival office on a
permanent basis.
The Karnataka Government has provided many incentives to the Karnataka Film Industry
and this festival is another incentive which gives a wider perspective to cinema as an
important cultural event.
Wishing all the best for the success of this prestigious International event.

Itis with immense happiness | am taking over as the Chairman of the prestigious Karnataka
Chalanachitra Academy at a time when it is organizing the 7th edition of BENGALURU
INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL scheduled to be held during December 4-11, 2014.
For a film maker and a keen cineaste like me Film Festivals offer great opportunity to view
the world in a new perspective in terms of the cultural context, landscapes and the
mindscapes of the people who inhabit different geographical locations. It is also an
occasion to get exposure to ever changing technological innovations in the medium and
also its economic parameters that drive independent film makers across the world.
Kannada cinema has always experimented with the medium. It is one of those cultures
where all the different possibilities of the medium are explored in earnestness. Kannada
film makers are very conscious of the need to maintain an aesthetic of family
entertainment and also extend it to social and intellectual persuasions. The audiences have
also responded positively for all good experiments. The evolution of Dr Rajkumar beyond
Star status into a cultural Icon and recognition of number of Directors as auteurs even in its
early stage of history is unique to Kannada cinema.
Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy has a mandate to spread healthy film culture and
conducting film festivals is one of the routes to achieve that objective. |am confident that
the message will reach the film loving public of Bengaluru.
On this special occasion, on behalf of Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy | welcome all the
participants of the event and wish thema satisfying and meaningful week at BIFFES.

We are extremely proud to present the 7th edition of BENGALURU INTERNATIONAL FILM
FESTIVAL to beheld during December 4-11, 2014.
Bengaluru has now found an important place in the global film festival circuit thanks to the
enthusiastic participation of film lovers of Bengaluru in BIFFES. The huge demand for
delegate registration, the long queues at the screening halls in the previous edition to catch
up with the best of the films have inspired us to extend the scope of the festival and also
enlarge the infrastructure. This time we have as many as 11 screens to showcase 170 films
categorized under 17 sections. The increased participation of Kannada films in the festival
also vindicates our stand that film festivals enhance the participation of the film
professionals in the academic understanding of the medium. Our declared motto of
“World in Bengaluru” has now an added statement “Bengaluru to the World”. The increase
inthe number of academic activities in this edition is also heartening. The range of topics
that are going to be taken up for debate in this edition is a clear pointer to the growing
maturity of the festival. We are pleased with these developments and we are also aware of
the responsibilities for the future of the festival. We hope to rise to the expectations of both
the film makers and the discerning audiences.
On this occasion, | take the opportunity to welcome all the delegates, Juries, Guests and
special invitees and wish them a pleasant week at BIFFES.

Film festivals empower the viewer to exercise his right to see what he wants rather than what
is thrust on him at the market place. Atthe same time it empowers the film makers to widen
their creative possibilities by watching the kaleidoscope of expressions from different
cultures, variety of economic, political and social environs. It is a democratic space for
cultural interaction. It mirrors the global human situation of today like no other medium. A
great place for meeting of minds through delivering of thoughts and ideas in a
contemporary mode and form.
BIFFES was conceived with this basic agenda and its 7th edition takes forward this idea of
film festivals to another dimension. The contemporary world cinema is there in abundant
quantity and quality is evident from the fact that we had to wade through more than 400
screeners to select 60 plus films. Of course ample space has been retained for the time
tested Classics, the Tributes, the Homages and Remembrances of the past pioneers. We
re-live the experience of great films of distinguished film makers like Mr Zanussi fro
Poland and Mr Phillip Noyce from Australia through their retrospectives. The Asian Cinem
and particularly the Indian component of it are very significant packages as the wor
cinema today is looking towards them for new understanding of the modern civilizatio
There is deep concern about recurring violence on women both physically an
psychologically under various individual and institutional circumstances and we ar
endeavouring to understand this through films from across the world. We are also awa
that visual media influence is so omnipotent we need to approach it through academic
exercises as well which leads us to create forums like Master Classes, Seminars,
Exhibitions, Workshops etc.. In the midst of all these there is a vast body of the Kannada
cinema which is trying to break the shackles of regional status and showing signs of
arriving on the stage of world cinema. BIFFES motto of World in Bengaluru now extends to
add Karnataka to the world as well.
